Release date for Harry Potter book #7

Harry Potter #6 cover

About three weeks ago, I got together with a few other Harry Potter fans to discuss the story. One of the topics that came up was the release date for the final book. Somebody (don’t remember who, sorry) said that they heard it would be published in 2007. This lead to speculation about the actual release date, which we predict will be July 7, 2007. This will be a Saturday (Friday night/Saturday morning at midnight), just like the last few books. Besides, since 7 is the most powerful magical number, how could the 7th book possibly be released on any other date than 7/7/7 (2007-07-07)?

I agree with you on the release date of the 7th Harry Potter book…The whole 7/7/7 thing would make a lot of sense. Me and a few of my friends have been wondering about it for a long time…we thought/hoped that it would be out this year since last year they release a movie and they will be releasing number 5 next year. We were hoping that they would go every other year. I am guessing from all that i have heard that it will not happen that way..but hey doesnt everyone wish. Well anyway..I am glad to see that other fans are wishing and keeping up with the love of Harry Potter. Keep it Real!—–

I believe that a longer release date is good. I believe book 6 was okay, but not up to her normal standards. I believe she should take the time and make the final book spectacular.

  3. 3 Greg Apr 4th, 2006 at 18:42 UTC

I really would like to know when this book will be out on book shelves

  4. 4 Crystal Apr 6th, 2006 at 23:09 UTC

I wish they would hurry up with the 7th book, I just finished the 6th and I’m ready for the 7th.

  5. 5 Jay Apr 9th, 2006 at 19:26 UTC

The book will not be released on July 7th, 2007. That is because it is a saturday… However, a more likely idea is that it would be released on the 3rd or 4th as that is about the same day of the summer books 5 and 6 were released.

This post has been getting a lot of traffic lately–it’s now one of my most popular of all time. So I figured it’s a good time to weigh in with replies to some earlier comments.

I agree with jason. I would much rather wait for an excellent book, instead of getting a merely decent book “on time”. I do think they rushed book 6, to its detriment. I also agree (partially) with Crystal: I was ready for book 7 as soon as I finished book 6. I think Jay is confusing the day we all spent waiting in line for the book with its actual release date. See the table below. Books 4-6 have all been released on Saturdays. These are the “post HP mania” books. Prior volumes (1-3) were all released in the UK before they were sold in the US.

After researching the prior volumes’ publication dates, I’m even more convinced that book 7 will be released on 7/7/7. It also helps explain the agonizing delay between books 4 and 5. My family and I always thought it was entirely due to J.K. Rowling’s sudden celebrity and involvement with the first movie. But now I see our error: We assumed JKR was writing volumes 1-4 as fast as they were being published in the United States (4 novels in under 2 years!!), when she had actually been turning them out in the UK almost exactly a year apart.

  7. 7 Jonathan Apr 16th, 2006 at 05:02 UTC

For the release date, you should also consider The Order Of The Phoenix movie date. The next film is expected in June 2007 so both release dates would correspond. This would boost either the book sales since after seeing the movie viewers will be encoraged to continue the story and read the final book.

If the releasa date will be 7/7/7 i will read all Harry Potter book’s once again…I can’t wait till 7/7/7…:-(((((((Harry Potter rules

  9. 9 Alan Apr 29th, 2006 at 15:49 UTC

i agree with waiting for a fantastic final release but since the bombings of london happened on 7/7 i doubt the book would be released on that date.. it would be in very bad taste! bein from ireland even i can see the headlines.. potter lands with a bang… it would be a gdisaster and embarrassment to have the dates clash!! i think closer to christmas would be best or maybe 7th jan 2008.. its far off but worth waiting for.

  10. 10 hpfan May 12th, 2006 at 09:10 UTC

it is really bad taste BUT i mean think about it the date fits in perfectly.this type of thimg only happens once in a lifetime.shes writing the 7th book and she ll released on the 7th day of the 7th month of the 7th year.its genious and honestly thinkin of the fanbase .i no this sounds really mean i dont think they will b that affected.most of them r after all teens and it really is irrelevant to teens so whatever. altho it will cause a huge uproar.ppl will call her insensitive but we r talkin about the money machine that is harry potter.its virtually unstoppable i doubt 1 true hp will not buy the book cause of the date if possible they would want to buy it even more cause its like the the perfect ending and goodbye to a perfect series(with the exceptoon of book 6 which i found tottslly and utterly insignifent snd empty she could of put in horcruxes in book 7 and called it a day.but a guess money gets the best of ppl

  11. 11 Sarah May 13th, 2006 at 19:06 UTC

the harry poters rock so continu them even after Hogwarts

  12. 12 P(:))L May 16th, 2006 at 15:57 UTC

It will come when it come. If it’s worth it, it does’nt matter how long one waited.

But still I say the earlier the better.

  13. 13 Maddiy K. Jun 10th, 2006 at 18:30 UTC

    Rock on J.K. Rowling!!!

  14. 14 Maddiy K. Jun 10th, 2006 at 18:38 UTC

I think that making Harry Potter ??? realesed on 7/7/07 is pure genius!! Even though my Boyfriend and I agree thats a long time from now…It gives us time to re-read the Harry Potter books and/or watch the movies. I guess we’ll just have to be excited for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that comes out next year!

  15. 15 Danger D. Jun 14th, 2006 at 19:55 UTC

i hope it comes out soon…. ive been a HP fan since i read the first book like 6 years i have read every book like at least 15 times a peice except half bloob prince which ive currently read 6 times….. it it isnt soon i might die…lol

  16. 16 sarah Jun 23rd, 2006 at 15:24 UTC

I think the book should come out on 7/7/7 what is more natural? But I can’t wait the books all rock she really is a great author!!!!

  17. 17 Julie Jun 27th, 2006 at 00:05 UTC

If you guys look on Joanne’s ’site, yiou would see ythat it comes out on July 7th 2006- THAT’S THIS YEAR

  18. 18 Morgan Jun 29th, 2006 at 21:34 UTC

Well 7/7/07 makes sense because with the 5th and 6th she seems to have it planned for when she will release it because for her since it is a magical book it needs to have a magical meaning for when the rest of the world is aloud to see it. And also some tid bits for you to chew on and think. One of my friends was able to confirm it coming out in 2007, Krum comes back, you see bills wedding, harry visits grodrics hollow, someone important dies, you find out more about dumbledores past, you find out who R.A.B. is, and you see the confrontation between harry and voldemort and finally find out where snapes loyalties truly lay. hope this has gotten you all thinking more about this book.

  19. 19 Brad Jul 2nd, 2006 at 01:48 UTC

I, after quite a bit of consideration, have come to the conclusion that Severus Snape is completely on the side of Dumbledore. I think he is pretending to be on the dark side because it’s, well, for the best. In the end, when Dumbledore is talking to Snape, Dumbledore says “Severous, please” and then Severus kills him. I think that JoAnn Rowling wants you all to think that Dumbledore is pleading with Snape to help him, but I actually think that Dumbledore there was pleading with Snape to go ahead and kill him, so the others on the dark side would believe that snape was truely on the dark side. Well there are my conclusions. :]

  20. 20 Kelsey Jul 2nd, 2006 at 02:08 UTC

7/7/07 That would be very cool. And I think I know who R.A.B.is. Regulus A. Black. I just thought you guys might want to know that. Brad I think your so right, no one belives me! They think I’m crazy!

  21. 21 asdf Jul 4th, 2006 at 05:23 UTC

why does it really matter when she releases it (i hope its sooner than later)… i mean, she won’t need to release it on 7/7/07 for people to go and get it, people will get it whenever it goes out

  22. 22 asdf Jul 4th, 2006 at 05:24 UTC

Julie– where does it say on her site that it comes out 7/7/06????

  23. 23 shannon metcalf Jul 9th, 2006 at 14:29 UTC

you know i cant believe it might be released on 7-7-07 gods number. which is a coincidence in whice all of my names first middle and last all have 7 letters. shannon michael metcalf. A.K.A(The-thing) all my names are 7 so it’s 777 gods number. that’s freaking awesome. I also have some questions. Does Snape really help harry? Is harry going to die with one of his friends? I actually think now and believe that harry is voldemorts last horcruxe. i think harry potter might have to kill himself to stop voldemort because harry himself has become voldemorts last horcrux. and i also beleive that harry potter is godric gryffindors heir. which makes voldemort slytherins heir. so harry was a part of godric which makes him voldemorts secondary thing.

  24. 24 shannon metcalf Jul 9th, 2006 at 14:34 UTC

i also have another comment. If severus snape was on the good side also known as dumbledores side why did he kill dumbledore at the end? I know that dumbledore wanted to die, but if snape was trully on the good side he would not have killed dumbledore. I mean if snape really wanted to help why didn’t he just give dumbledore an antidote to help the poison from killing him? voldemort is salazar slytherins heir. and Harry Potter is godric gryffindors heir then who is helga hufflepuffs heir? I think that hermione granger is so smart that she is ruina ravenclaws heir. Gave me something to think about but i think she is ravanclaws heir due to all of her smartness and knowledge of spells when she was a muggle-born.

  25. 25 shannon metcalf Jul 9th, 2006 at 14:40 UTC

now i know that i have left two posts already… but i agree with some of the kids that harry potter books should continue after hogwarts. Like lets say for example harry potter does sacrifice himself… what if he comes back from the dead like nothing happened at all? Undecayed, unscratched, lightning scar all gone, perfectly normal, and then he rounds up the members of the D.A and they all send out to destroy the rest of voldemorts horcruxes and then harry potter goes up to voldemort (when he’s mortal finaly) and then goes for one last showdown against him!!!!! That’s what i think should happen u know since harry came back alive perfectly normal that his horcrux is now gone. but instead of killing himself having someone do it to him so he can come back alive.

  26. 26 MARY FELTD Jul 17th, 2006 at 03:57 UTC

COULD IT BE POSSIBLE THAT DUMBELDORE IS NOT DEAD THAT THE SINGING OF FAUX WAS HIM HEALING HIM SO HE COULD LAY LOW AND LET THE DEATHEATERS THINK HE WAS DEAD

  27. 27 kylie highly Jul 18th, 2006 at 16:13 UTC

you know, i went to a site called dumbledore is not dead and i read the whole thing, all the links and everything, and now i am completely convinced that dubledore is… well, not dead. i agree a little with mary feltd because i think that faux was dumbledore’s horocrux, because in the first book on dumbledore’s chocolate frog card, it says that he got rid of some guy, i cant think of the name but i think that he used that death of that guy to make a horocrux for himself and he put it in faux because faux can never die because he can always be born again from his ashes and, when they were all in the hospital wing at the end of book 6, is it not the healer, madame pmfrey that, when hears the singing of faux that she is startled or something like that? Well faux IS a creature of healing… just go to www.dumbledoreisnotdead.com to find out all the info. i am dead seriouse, this will change your perspective in, like, two seconds. i think there are 4 pags to the first little bit but you might want to chech the other side links as well. Thanks for listening!

  28. 28 kylie highly Jul 18th, 2006 at 16:26 UTC

oh, i know i have already put one of these on but another important thing is the missing text. The UK edition of Half-Blood Prince is missing some text that is included in the American edition, and it’s text that is very important to this clue! This is the text as it appears in the UK edition:

“He told me to do it or he’ll kill me. I’ve got not choice.” “Come over to the right side, Draco, and we can hide you more completely than you can possibly imagine. What is more, I can send members of the Order to your mother tonight to hide her likewise. Your father is safe at the moment in Azkaban…when the time comes we can protect him too…come over to the right side, Draco…you are not a killer…” Malfoy stared at Dumbledore. (HBP UK Edition pg 552)

But this is the same passage from the American edition (text missing from the UK edition with the little *** by the begginging and end):

“He told me to do it or he’ll kill me. I’ve got no choice.” “He cannot kill you if you are already dead. Come over to the right side Draco, and we can hide you more completely than you can possibly imagine. What is more, I can send members of the Order to your mother tonight to hide her likewise. Nobody would be surprised that you had died in your attempt to kill me — forgive me, but Lord Voldemort probably expects it. Nor would the Death Eaters be surprised that we had captured and killed your mother — it is what they would do themselves, after all. Your father is safe at the moment in Azkaban…When the time comes we can protect him too. Come over to the right side, Draco…you are not a killer…” Malfoy stared at Dumbledore. (HBP US Edition pg 591)

Both of the ommissions are directly related, they are about having Draco appeared to have died, so it would seem the ommisions are intentional. Did J.K. include those lines originally, and then decide she had gone too far and made the clue too transparent and obvious? Is it possible she decided to remove them, but the lines got accidentally included in the American edition anyway?

i found the websight that kylie mentioned last month and i totally agree with her. another thing from the websight is that faux didnt save dumbledore. we know he was pu there because he “cried” for dumbledoreand we also know that he can save people from the avada kedavra curse cause we saw it happen in book five so so why didnt he save dumbledore? because dumbledore has officially faked his death. go to www.dumbledoreisnotdead.com to read all about it.

  30. 30 troy addington Jul 23rd, 2006 at 03:07 UTC

I think it should come out late 2006. mainly because I love Harry Potter. Iv been waiting for it to come out!!!!!!!!!!

  33. 33 andria Aug 11th, 2006 at 00:40 UTC

OMG!Harry Potter is the best series of books ever to exist!I almost cried when I heard about Dumbledore’s death.I believe that he died, and that Snape is really on Voldemort’s side.Dumbledore wouldn’t have a Horcrux, because, I mean, he wouldn’t tear his soul in half, that’s like dark magic.I can’t wait for the 7th book!

  34. 34 nathan Aug 13th, 2006 at 20:00 UTC

dd died he is a good wizard and wouldnt use a horxucures. also dd would have ben able to tell if harry was a hor acures. also r.a.b is seriuos blacks brother if u were paying a tenthen in the 5 book siruis says that he was killed directly by lord voldermort why because he stole the horacures however i do not believe he destroyed it i believe it is in grimwauld place.also in the 6 book lupin says voldermort killed him directly. also u all are forgeting about wormtail. in book 3 DD tells harry one day he will be happy that he saved wormtail. wormtail will help harry get the horacureses. think about that. also for those who said harry was a horacures and would kill him self and come back to kill voldermort. DD contiunusly tells us that no spell can bring back the dead i also believe snape is good because of how he acted when he was fleaing with draco. and harry called him a coward for killing dd and snape says (dont u dont understand)

  35. 35 Regina Aug 27th, 2006 at 00:16 UTC

I believe that the release date will be 7/30/2007. Why this day a week day? Well, it is Harry’s birthday. Why not release your last book on his birthday.

  36. 36 samantha Aug 30th, 2006 at 18:46 UTC

this is an answer as to why snape killed dumbledore. as you may remember narcissa malfoy and bellatrix lestrange had snape make an unbreakable vow. snape didn’t want to die so he killed dumbledore in order to save himself. it may be a selfish reason and i doubt a lot of people would even think about it but some would. i know that i probably wouldn’t kill any body to save my own skin, but some would seriously consider it.

  37. 37 mark Sep 4th, 2006 at 05:35 UTC

point is .. THE BOOK IS COMING OUT! =]

  38. 38 Kuri Yumegashi Sep 19th, 2006 at 05:02 UTC

I agree that the last book may come out on the 7/7/7 date, but it may also come out on his birthday, as Regina suggested. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Unfortunately.

I don’t believe that Dumbledore is alive. Fawkes’ song revitalizes people, just as in Book 4. He sings that note and Harry feels like he has the strenth to go, it doesnt heal his wounds or anything. That, and, the Avada Kedarva (sp?) curse is unstoppable. Harry only managed to survive because of his mother’s sacrifice. In order to “come to life again” Dumbledore would have had to make a horcrux, which I really dont think he ever would. He’s not a murderer, thus would not have the means to tear his soul apart. Face it guys. Dumbldore’s gone. But i think his death will give Harry another reason to fight.

Snape, I think, is still on Dumbledore’s side. I think that he told Dumbledore what he had made the unbreakable vow to do. I think that Dumbledore asked him to kill him when he said “Severus, Please” One to save Snape’s life (remember the vow would have killed him if he didn’t act on it) and another to keep a spy in Voldemort’s army. Voldemort, and the other Death Eater’s would see and think that Snape is sitll on their side, and not question it whatsoever. Too bad Dumbledore didn’t share that little bit of info with rest of the Order.

To Kylie Highly - I think you are missing a little bit of translation. When saying that they wouldn’t be able to find him, as he would be dead… That same paragraph explains that Voldemort probably expected him to die in the attempt to kill Dumbledore, either by Dumbledore’s hands, or by the hands of the order, or in Azkaban.

I’ve read Rumors that Harry is Godric Gyrffindor’s heir. I really don’t think so personally, as I think Dumbledore would have pointed this out to Harry, though it may have given Voldemort a reason to attack him instead of Neville originally…. But Dumbledore just said that Voldemort chose what he thought was the greater of two threatswhich happened to be a half-blood like himself. I think Dumbledore would have said something then if that rumor was true.

I’ve heard other rumors saying that two of the major characters will die. GIven that Voldemort will die (hopefully, lest she may have terrified kids panicked that Voldemort or his Death Eater’s might show up on their and kill them and their familes…) I think that there are a few possiblities for the other death. One is Harry himself. This would effectively end the series (as she couldn’t write another. lack of a main character) and she wouldn’t get badgered about continuing with Harry’s life. Course.. with that she’ll have alot of angry fanboys and girls banging down her door…. Another I think would be either Ron or Hermione. They’re both planning on going with Harry to Godric’s HOllow and beyond, so what’s to say one of them doesn’t sacrifice themselves to protec tthe other or Harry? Maybe even Lupin, thus ending the “old group”. James is dead, Sirius is dead, Wormtail is as good as… HArry would be left without any ties to his Father’s old friends. It might even be Snape. Harry did say that Snape has better watch his back the next time they see one another, and Harry might kill him before the confession gets out. or even as the confession gets out. You never know.

Enough from me for now. Though I will be back. ^^ I like discussing possiblities for the future book. Here’s hoping for a 2007 release date.

  39. 39 Balto Oct 1st, 2006 at 06:57 UTC

There is no set date for the book to be released, but J.K. Rowling says she hopes to get it out by that date. We’ve still go a little under a year before we can even start counting down so I’d just find something to keep my mind off Harry Potter for about another 330 days. No offense, but there’s no use getting worked up about it when it’s still so far away.

  40. 40 hawa Oct 3rd, 2006 at 01:13 UTC

i think that book 7 will be the longest and sadest I have cryed through book 4,5,and 6, so I think that I will cry alot when I read book 7

    HARRY POTTER ROX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. 43 shiori hana Oct 3rd, 2006 at 15:59 UTC

a friend of mine told me that harry might die in the last book. it’s bad enough that i cried in the 3,4,5 and 6 book i don’t think i need anymore reasons as to why i have to kill my self if he does.

  44. 44 Natasha Oct 3rd, 2006 at 18:46 UTC

i hope that this book comes out soon! i dont know how much longer i can wait!!!!!!!!!!!!:]

  45. 45 HARRY Oct 5th, 2006 at 16:25 UTC

    NEVIL BECOMES A TEACHER

  48. 48 Balto Oct 6th, 2006 at 21:49 UTC

One question. What could have made you cry in book 3 shiori hana? I can understand crying because Sirius died and because Dumbledore died, but what on earth could have brought you to tears in book 3 and 4?

  49. 49 HARRY Oct 7th, 2006 at 11:26 UTC

balto don’t forget that she is girl

  50. 50 Kira Marion Oct 10th, 2006 at 20:21 UTC

excuse me… Harry? What gives you the right to infer that just because she’s a girl that she cries at everything? Possibly she shed happy tears at Sirius’s escape in the thrid. Or frightened for Harry/them in the 4th after he comes back. You never know.

And I somehow doubt Neville will be a teacher. He’s going to be a 7th year student as well as Harry.

  51. 51 HARRY Oct 11th, 2006 at 12:41 UTC

i am sure about it i have visited another site it is true after his 7th year at school nevil is going to become a teacher

  52. 52 HARRY Oct 11th, 2006 at 12:45 UTC

something i forgot to tell u is that,i said she is a girl because girls are more sensitive than boys (in most cases)

  53. 53 Kira Marion Oct 24th, 2006 at 22:08 UTC

Keyword there is AFTER his seventh year. Neville is Harry’s age, (if not to the day even as established in the 5th book) Which website did you get that from even? I’m curious to see now.

  54. 54 Jen Figgy Nov 8th, 2006 at 01:19 UTC

I agree that a longer release date is better. It builds up suspense to think that she is actually working on it this long. But I also believe that the movies spaced so far apart just isn’t fair. I wanted to go to the movies to see the fifth movie this november, but now I have to wait about another year to see it. I think that the seventh book should be longer than the fifth book because it is the last book of the series. Can’t wait till it comes out! Harry Potter will last forever!

  55. 55 T Q Nov 9th, 2006 at 19:48 UTC

Just stumbled on to this discussion, and I had never put together the 7/7/7 thing. If JKR misses this date, she has missed a huge opportunity to exploit a once in a lifetime situation. I have read in other discussion boards that Jinny Weasley’s connection to the number seven is also a huge part of the next plot (she is the seventh born of a seventh born). Plus, I think it will all be up to Hermoine to explain it all, since she is the only one who has studied arithmancy.

7/7/7’s got to be the date…it is just too perfect!

  56. 56 tyn Nov 18th, 2006 at 11:43 UTC

i just can’t wait for the release of book 7, i’m missing harry so much:(

7/7/07 for book 7 sounds like fun and all, but really in the end does it matter as much as who J.K. Rowling is going to kill off in the end? I mean if she kills voldemort then ok, yeah, how predictable. If she kills Harry then ok, a lot of people hate her now. I just thought of something on the date, 7/7/07. “isn’t 7 the most powerfully magical number…(The Half Blood Price.) J.k Rowling i think was planning on 7 books and 2007 to release this book, but the exact date??? I don’t know.

Well its official release date is 7-21-07 as many of you probably know by now.
So just a couple weeks later than a lot of people though.

i hope she kills harry. it’ll be different from the norm. or maybe harry’s soul could just be destroyed…or harry makes a horcrux but still dies but his soul lives on and he takes a new body. much like voldemort. but volde still dies. i’d like that. A LOT.
