Whither the metric system?

The US was one of, if not the, first country to adopt a decimal monetary system, way back in 1786-1792. So why are we the very last industrialized country on the planet still using a pre-18th century system of weights and measures?

Decimal currency systems have swept over practically the entire world. (The only exceptions in Wikipedia are two African countries whose currencies are purely local.) Why is that? Because it’s far simpler to deal with a currency that uses base-10 arithmetic! If you need to add up the total cost of several items, just add them up! No hassling with base-12 (Brit. pence per shilling) or base-20 (Brit. shillings per pound) or other non-decimal systems.

Americans have been using decimal currency for centuries, so perhaps we take the simplicity for granted. But why are we putting up with the ludicrous, arcane system of weights and measures we have been saddled with? 3 teaspoons per tablespoon, 2 tablespoons per ounce, 8 ounces per cup, 4 cups per quart, 4 quarts per gallon (wow, some consistancy!), followed by various multi-gallon measurements. This system is crazy! It uses bases 2, 3, 4, and 8, just for volume! I admit, you can divide a gallon into integral thirds, but you have to go all the way to teaspoons to do it! (4 qt*4 cups*8 oz*2 tbsp*3 tsp/3=256 tsp=1 qt+1 cup+2 oz+1 tbsp+1 tsp) That took me a while to figure out, and I don’t even want to think about actually measuring such a quantity!

We are stubbornly holding on to this messed up system due to cultural inertia, and because the US still uses it, several other countries that do business with the US are still supporting it in their import/export markets. We have committed (several times!) to convert to the SI units that the rest of the world uses. It will greatly simplify life for Americans as well as the rest of the world when we finally accomplish this goal. Not only that, but it will also be good for the import/export business of this country.

I can already hear somebody complaining, “What about my recipes? They use teaspoons, et al.” To this, I have only to point to my wife and kids–whenever they want to multiply or divide a recipe, they come ask me how many tablespoons are in a cup. I’d be willing to bet that many people under ~45 couldn’t give all the basic units of the American system, along with how many sub-units (and sub-sub-units, etc) comprise them. It might be an interesting online quiz. Hmmmm…

kilo: 1000 vs 1024

Is a “kilobyte” 1024 bytes, or 1000? The traditional answer is 1024. [Just an aside: “tradition” for a field that has only been around for a few decades. Chuckle.] The metric system, which defined the “kilo-” prefix to mean 1000, has been around since the 18th/19th century. This is a little confusing, but some people claim that it doesn’t matter since “everybody knows that computer measurements refer to the binary prefixes” (where kilo=1024, mega=1024*1024, etc.) So how does one interpret something like the PCI bus specification’s “133.33 megabytes per second”? Does this mean 133,333,333 bytes or 139,810,133 (133.33*1024*1024)? If you think the ~5% discrepancy doesn’t matter, think about this: If you were a circuit designer charged with implementing this “specification”, would the precise definition of a megabyte be important to you? (Assuming that you wished to keep your job, the answer would be “YES!”)

To solve this problem, the IEC published their prefixes for binary multiples in November of 2000. The general form of these prefixes uses the first two letters of the metric prefix followed by “bi” (for “binary”), e.g. ki[lo]+bi[nary]=kibi, explicitly referring to 1024. Wikipedia has a very handy table in their article on computer bytes giving corresponding metric and binary prefixes.

One of the arguments against these more specific terms is that very few people know about them, so here I stand on my tiny soapbox, trying to correct this problem. Quick, Sancho! Hand me my lance!

Spinach salad

A few days ago, we got some lunch at JD Willow’s in Galt where my wife had this awesome salad. Here’s our attempt at reverse engineering it.

Greek spinach salad
Ingredients:
– spinach leaves
– red onion, thinly sliced
– strawberries, sliced
– feta cheese, crumbled
– walnuts, shelled and crushed
– raspberry vinaigrette

Pretty simple. Get a bowl, dump in all the dry ingredients, and drizzle with the dressing.

If you want to try the original, visit JD Willow’s. I can’t find a website for them, but they’re located at 1061 C St., Suite 110, Galt, Calif. 95632. 209-744-8149. We’ve never been disappointed with anything we’ve tried there.

Window screens are NOT included!

Remodel journal 2005-06-12: One of the things we noticed when we bought our “new” house was the lack of screens on most of the windows–we had screens on the two bedroom windows and the bathroom window, all the other windows were screenless. We don’t have central air conditioning in the house, so being able to open the windows is a pretty high priority. But we didn’t really want all the flies and mosquitoes and other such pests to have free reign of the house, so screens were one of the first things that needed to be taken care of.

Carpet on the walls?!?

Remodel journal 2005-06-11: I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes–somebody actually put carpet on the wall of this house!

floor-to-ceiling carpet

It looked a little weird, (although we were getting used to it), but the real problem was that the previous owner(s) smoked–apparently quite a bit. This stuff reeked, so it had to go.

Carpet coming down

There’s some rustic paneling underneath, but it kind of clashes with the painted brick fireplace. None of which really matters, since the paneling will be removed when we remodel. We plan on sheetrocking the walls and installing built-in bookcases on either side of the fireplace.

J-blue theme not calling gatekeeper_pose_challenge automagically

I’m wondering if the known bug in gatekeeper 1.5 depends on which theme you’re running? I’m running journalized-blue, and it was rejecting comments with “Sorry, posting has been closed for the time being.” errors.

I’m running Eric Meyer’s gatekeeper anti-spam tool. He has one known bug listed, where the auto-challenge feature doesn’t always insert the challenge in the comment form. I had tested this when I first installed the software, and it worked at the time, so I forgot about it. Then I added a bunch of themes to my site. I started getting a few complaints from people, saying that comments were closed, so I went and checked all my settings–all my comment settings looked correct, so I was stumped. Until I remembered about that known bug…

I found that my journalized-blue theme was rejecting comments from non-registered users. I added an explicit call to gatekeeper_pose_challenge() per this suggestion on Eric’s page.

I put the following code in the journalized-blue theme comments.php, between the email and text inputs:

if (function_exists('gatekeeper_pose_challenge')) {
gatekeeper_pose_challenge('',3); // default format string, tab index==3
}

(Need I mention that this needs to be wrapped with php tags?)

I have the theme switcher installed and several themes available, so I’ll log out and try to comment on this post anonymously with each of my themes.

Using WordPress tags? Don’t forget to re-apply the tags patch!

Thanks to Joseph and my blogroll, I saw the WordPress 1.5.1.3 security update. I forgot to re-apply the tags patch from Felix Wong’s tags plugin the first time through. Doh! Thanks for posting this, Joseph.

EM ‘n EN

Just a quick little note about The Trouble With EM ’n EN. This is an awesome article on the lost art of typesetting and includes information on em dashes, en dashes, and all sorts of other “special” characters not included in 7-bit ASCII. Required reading for anybody putting content on the web!

I just remembered that “The Trouble with EM ‘n EN” is what got me started on blogging! I read the article, then checked out the author’s website/blog. Some of the things I read there got me riled up enough that I felt the overwhelming urge to post my $0.02 worth in response. So many thanks to Peter K. Sheerin for a great article as well as getting me into the blogosphere! 😉

Podcasts and the I-pod Shuffle

If you look at my archives, you can see that I just recently started blogging (and reading blogs). So I missed this post on Acetylene.net. Zeno’s comment mentions listening to podcasts with an I-pod Shuffle. I’ve tried this before, and it didn’t work very well, for the following reasons:

  • With the Shuffle, you can’t “bookmark” a podcast. If you’re only listening to a 5-minute podcast, that’s not a big deal. But I was trying to listen to (for example) The O’Franken Factor, which is several hours long. I usually don’t have a chance to listen to the whole show at one sitting, and hitting “Pause” (and not using my I-pod for several hours) isn’t always an option.
  • There’s no way to make notes on a podcast with the Shuffle. I’m listening to podcasts, and hearing cool stuff that I would like to be able to re-visit and/or blog. Unless you hit your stopwatch when you start listening to a podcast, and have pencil and paper handy, there’s no way to make notes on what you’re listening to.
  • And finally, Zeno’s complaint: there’s no way to change ratings on the Shuffle.

Don’t misunderstand me–I love my Shuffle! It’s great for listening to tunes on the bike trail, or working in the yard, etc. But for non-fluff podcasts, Zeno had the right idea: do yourself a favor and spring for a higher-end I-pod.

To-do list for tags support in other themes

Just thinking about what still needs to be done to get tags support in my other themes…

Steam will need to have 4 files modified:

  • archive.php
  • index.php
  • sidebar.php
  • and single.php

I’ve already modified at least one of these files for other reasons, but I have saved original copies of all the files that have been/need to be modified.

I need to clean up my earlier work on Borderline Chaos, and then add tags support to it. I’ve got the original theme files in another directory, still need to see which files I’ve already changed. Files to be modified for tags support:

  • 404.php
  • archives.php
  • index.php
  • links.php
  • search.php
  • sidebar.php
  • single.php

Sigh…

Elvgren looks like only index.php needs to be modified. I don’t remember if I have already modified this theme, so I’ll need to download a fresh copy.

Journalized-Blue and Sharepoint Like are already finished. The WordPress Default and the pirate theme (“Yaaarr, ’tis me blog!”) will probably remain tag-less, and may even be deprecated. The WordPress Classic theme will certainly be removed.
